Ephesians 4 (Part 1) | Aaron Estes

Ephesians 4 emphasizes unity in the body of Christ and living a life that reflects our calling as believers. Paul calls for humility, gentleness, patience, and love to maintain unity in the Spirit. The chapter outlines the diversity of spiritual gifts given to believers for building up the church, encouraging maturity and stability in faith. Paul also contrasts the old sinful way of life with the new life in Christ, urging believers to put off corrupt behavior, speak truth, and exhibit kindness and forgiveness as Christ forgave us.

Highlights:

  1. Unity in the Spirit (Verses 1–6): Paul urges believers to live in unity, as there is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all.

  2. Spiritual Gifts (Verses 7–16): Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip believers, build up the church, and achieve spiritual maturity.

  3. Living as a New Creation (Verses 17–24): Believers are called to reject their former sinful lives and embrace their new identity in Christ, created in righteousness and holiness.

  4. Practical Christian Living (Verses 25–32): Paul gives specific instructions: speak truthfully, control anger, work honestly, speak words that build others up, and practice kindness and forgiveness.

Application:

  • Strive for unity in your relationships, recognizing that all believers are part of one body in Christ.

  • Identify and use your spiritual gifts to contribute to the growth and maturity of the church.

  • Examine your lifestyle, attitudes, and behaviors. Let go of anything that aligns with your "old self" and actively pursue the "new self" in Christ.

  • Practice kindness, forgive others as Christ forgave you, and ensure your words and actions reflect God's love and truth.
