Ephesians 4 (Part 3) | Aaron Estes

Summary

In Ephesians 4:17–24, Paul urges believers to no longer live as the Gentiles do—lost in the futility of their minds and darkened in their understanding due to separation from God. Instead, he calls Christians to embrace their new identity in Christ by putting off the “old self,” which is corrupted by deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of their minds. This transformation involves putting on the “new self,” created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Paul paints a contrast between the lifestyle of unbelievers—marked by moral decay and spiritual ignorance—and the life that believers are called to live: one that reflects God’s character. The passage is a powerful call to live differently because of the new life found in Christ.

Highlights:

  • Renewed Thinking: Believers are called to reject the old, futile mindset and be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

  • New Identity: Christians are to put on the new self, created in God’s likeness.

  • Moral Contrast: There is a clear difference between the old way of living (corruption) and the new way (holiness and truth).

  • Spiritual Transformation: True change happens from the inside out, through a work of the Spirit and intentional renewal.

Application:

  • Ask God daily to renew your mind through His Word and Spirit.

  • Be intentional in shedding sinful habits and attitudes that belong to your old life.

  • Clothe yourself with righteousness by making choices that reflect your new identity in Christ.

  • Be a visible example of godly transformation in how you speak, act, and love others.
