Galatians 4 (Part 1) | Eric Roberts

Updated: Sep 30, 2024

In Galatians 4:1-20, Paul continues to emphasize the difference between living under the law and living in the freedom offered by Christ. He uses the analogy of an heir, who, though destined to inherit everything, is no different from a servant while still a child, until the time set by the father. Paul explains that believers were once in bondage under the basic principles of the world, but God sent His Son to redeem them, granting them the full rights of sons and daughters. He also expresses concern for the Galatians, as they are returning to old, enslaving customs. Paul's love and genuine care for the Galatians are evident as he pleads with them to stay in the freedom Christ has provided.

Highlights:

1. Believers are no longer slaves but sons and heirs of God through Christ, with the Spirit of God's Son in their hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father."

2. Paul uses the metaphor of an heir, illustrating that before Christ, people were like children in bondage, but now they have been set free to enjoy their inheritance.

3. Paul shows deep pastoral concern for the Galatians, as they were turning back to observing "weak and beggarly elements," wanting to be under the law again, which could hinder their spiritual growth.

Life Applications:

1. Live in Freedom: Embrace the identity of being a child of God rather than falling back into rituals or a rule-based relationship with God. Experience the freedom and joy that comes from knowing you are an heir of His promises.

2. Guard Against Legalism: Be wary of traditions or old ways that might draw you back into a performance-driven relationship with God. Remember that it’s by faith, not by works, that we experience His grace.

3. Spiritual Growth: Nurture your spiritual journey by aligning with the truth of God’s Word, not the empty patterns of religion. Seek to grow in your relationship with God rather than merely fulfilling religious expectations.
